FAQ – Areas of Learning

AREAS OF LEARNING

Both private and group classes are offered. Group classes are for children and focus on discovering music from a variety of different angles, and they are structured differently to adult lessons. Both children and adults can have private lessons. For children, the private lessons complement the group lessons to focus on the detail and the areas the child needs extra attention to progress through the classes.
You can learn:
  • Piano Lessons (Adults and Children)
  • Singing Lessons (Adults and Children)
  • Music Theory and Solfege
  • Professional artist preparations for auditions and/or recordings
  • Theory of Instruments
  • AMEB Examination Preparation
  • How to read sheet music
  • History of Music
  • Choir Arrangements
  • Composition of Music (including how to use the software Sibelius, Cubase, AVID, Logic Pro, or any other)
  • How to create backing tracks for film and theatre
Start with what inspires you and what you enjoy. It doesn't make sense to do something that you do not enjoy. Some students start off wanting to learn piano, and end up enjoying learning theory. Others find that composing their own music is satisfying.
The key here is to start somewhere! We can help you find where your strengths are, and help you navigate through music and find what you enjoy.
Having a goal to perform is a great motivator. I like to encourage my students to perform when they are ready (however this is entirely optional). After performing something you have been working on feels like a great accomplishment. While it may seem daunting for new performers, every student is glad they did it and it has given them a new level of confidence!
Wollongong has some great theatre production teams that hold auditions regularly throughout the year. Some of these are the Roo Theatre Company, Phoenix Theatre, and the Arcardian Theatre Group. There are also regular charity functions held throughout the year that feature local artists. Performing at these help build confidence and build up performance experience.
I have coached many people for singing auditions and can help prepare you for them if this is something you are interested in.
